About BAX Photo

About me

Hi! I'm Brad. I'm originally from Southampton, Hampshire. I moved to uni in South Wales for four years before moving to Gloucestershire.

I studied Electronics and Electrical engineering at university, which is the basis for my current job. In between designing circuits and testing PCBs, I like to get out and about as much as I can. Previous to May 2024, I didn't drive so relied on public transport to get around - and walking through cornfields! According to Google Maps I have been to over 1400 places in the UK. In 2024 I also made my first trip abroad to Circuit de Navarra and Bilbao in northern Spain.

Early Hobbies

Not sure why, but I got quite into trains when I was younger - probably because there was a rail line and depot near my house, they go big, go fast, and make lots of noise. I eventually found I liked going places - bus or train, or by bike. Having an engineering mindset also meant I was interested how trains worked - signalling and operations. Its kinda cool knowing how everything comes together - better than standing on the end of a cold station platform!

Later Hobbies

I had always been interested in motorsport from a young age, the usuals such Formula 1, MotoGP and the like. I also had a small interest in Indycar and to a lesser extent, NASCAR. But I had never been to an event. That changed in April 2022 when I discovered Prescott Hill climb was close to me. Some random Saturday morning I went there for their first hillclimb meet of the year, and oh! The sight! The sound! It was really cool to go see something in real life for once. The sounds of engine and smell of exhaust then kickstarted a motorsport photography hobby which continues to today.

Grimley Raceway

Turns out quite a few people at my work are involved in motorsport. One of my colleagues, Colin Dunn, marshalls at Grimley Raceway which is a banger and stock car racing oval in Worcestershire. I thought I'd come along and lend a hand a couple times at the track and wave a few flags. Something entirely different from the bikes but good fun seeing the utterly bonkers damage and noise and smells at the side of the race track. I've also lent a hand at car parking (woop) and a bit of scrutineering. Cheers Colin for letting me come help!

Cameras & Equipment

2022

When I was relatively new to photography I wanted to slightly dodge the high initial cost and purchased some second hand equipment for 2022. £300 later, many eBay searches and some extensive deliberation led to my first only DSLR purchase, a CANON EOS 100D. With the kit came a couple of lenses, a kit bag, external flash, shutter release and everything else a beginner photographer would want. Perfect

Unfortunately since then both lenses have broken (typical for second hand ones!) but they have been replaced by a Canon 15-80mm lens from Cardiff, and a Tamron 70-300mm lens from Birmingham.

2023 - Now

Due to the successes in 2022, and meeting so many amazing people, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new camera. Decided to go for the Canon R7, with an extra-zoomy lens. And a spare battery - never know when you're gonna need one of those! Amongst this I got an adapter so I could continue to use the old lenses. I continue to use this camera - and learn all the settings! - until now.

Other Equipment

Before the Canon 100D purchase I had a multitude of small digital cameras - mostly for filming. These include a Panasonic TZ93 preceded by a small but mighty Canon Powershot camera.

Ancillary equipment includes two Velbon tripods, a selection of screw-on attachments for the front of the lens, a monopod, and of course the all important lens wipes!

I hope to use the TZ93 a bit more in 2025 to get some p.o.v. videos and generic videos of everything.
